- the Essential Care and Handling Guide for Cut Flower Professionals

To make cut flowers last longer, here are some simple yet effective care tips:

  1. Trim the stems: Cut about 1-2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle before placing them in water. This increases water absorption.

  2. Use clean vases: Make sure your vase is clean to prevent bacterial growth.

  3. Change the water regularly: Replace the water every 2-3 days to keep it fresh.

  4. Use flower food: Add the packet of flower food that usually comes with bouquets to the water, or make your own with sugar, lemon juice, and a few drops of bleach.

  5. Remove leaves below water line: Leaves submerged in water can rot and cause bacteria to grow.

  6. Keep flowers cool: Place the vase away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts.

  7. Re-cut stems as needed: Every few days, re-trim the stems to keep them absorbing water well.

Following these steps can help your cut flowers stay vibrant and fresh longer.
